How We Build

Knowledge From Experience

Coming from the Bayliss family, with extensive wall and ceiling experience through the capital region, Baytek was founded in 2002. Baytek expanded quickly to its average workforce of 75 employees, but has shown it can adapt to market conditions peaking at roughly 200 (2008). Baytek’s management retention from its inception is a testament to our belief in our philosophies and abilities.

Baytek has grown to be one of the top drywall contractors in the Edmonton area and leverages it’s experience of complex buildings and products to better the final project outcomes. We stand out by delivering a high-quality product / service while minimizing costs to building Owners. Through elevated transparency, professionalism, planning, and early adoption, our team repeatedly hands over above average projects.

Our team has been involved with many of the most complicated and demanding projects in the area. Baytek has excelled at complex projects like the Royal Alberta Museum & Mill Woods Library, capacity and schedule constraints for clients like Costco & Target, new types of contracts such as Design Assist & Integrated Project Delivery, security issues at the Edmonton Institution (Max.) & Alberta School for Deaf, and high repetition projects like the Kelly Ramsey Tower & condominium towers.

Better By Collaborating

Baytek has been involved in some of the most cooperative delivery methods, Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), and Design Assist, and Design Build. Even in standard project delivery models, communication and planning between each team member is key to a well-run project. The opportunities for alternate types of contracts came from the experience in our scope, but also from demonstrating a level of communication required to build and maintain a successful project team.

Working with project stakeholders in mind, we continue to create interiors spaces that everyone can enjoy. Being honest, transparent, and succinct is something we try to instill in all of our leaders. If we run into a concern (design flaw, coordination clash, delivery schedule, shortages, etc.), it’s communicated quickly to find the best solution for the project team moving forward. Improving the project outcomes ultimately betters Baytek.

Make Baytek your next choice for a project partner and collaborator.

Safety Is Not Optional

Worksite safety is continually improving. General Contractors and Owners don’t need to be taking on the risk of injury on their projects. Working with Baytek minimizes that risk, and puts our systems to work for you. Having been awarded a Certificate of Recognition (COR) by the Alberta Construction Safety Association, we are committed to safe work practices. Our comprehensive safety regiment covers projects from large residential to industrial projects.

Bayek has been involved in a number of projects the require Drug & Alcohol testing, security screenings, minimum training requirements, and more. Expectations and worker training is at the core, and then built on with extensive hazard assessments and controls. Know your project is being built safely with competent and qualified tradespeople.

Lean and Green

We were introduced to Lean Construction during the design one of the first IPD projects in Canada, and the first net-zero building in Alberta, Mosaic Centre. Through workshops and Big Room sessions, Baytek learned new techniques that are being applied to a number of other projects moving forward. Pull planning, and Last Planner systems, are becoming more common in the construction world. Using the schedule end date to pull back from, the durations are looked at from a "how do we get there?" approch rather than "this is how long it takes" to achieve the project schedule. Modifying works spaces to promote collaboration, goal setting, and waste management are all techniques we’ve learned or bulit upon to better our output.

With extensive experience in multiple versions of the LEED program, Baytek is capable of securing the correct products to make your green project a success.

Innovation and Technology

While technology has been rapidly changing in the construction office for the last couple of decades, site work has been slower to find and adopt new innovations. In a lot of instances, the design can be revised to better suit installation, or a new tool or method may be employed to allow a more complex design. Many of those ideas start from experienced tradespeople looking for a better way to do things. Input from the site workforce, executing the design, is invaluable in evaluating new technology. Our team tries to actively engage the workforce to receive more feedback as well as increase the quality, as each person has a vested interest in making the project a success. Site demonstrations and training are a regular part of our system.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) can be used to collaborate and find conflicts before they reach the field. To achieve the most benefit, the people giving information to the modelers require an experienced background. The model then brings together the experience from primary subtrades, the general contract, design team, and ownership group into one cohesive vision. Baytek’s team has the experience that can help to avoid conflict and find better solutions where applicable.

Why Risk It?

The cost of a subtrade failing is substantial. Baytek’s risk profile is at the top of our peers. Through successful completion of hundreds of projects, we’re able to bond large projects and aggregated values. Knowing your project is in the right hands is worth every penny.

Baytek’s internal risk management generally starts at project award. Identifying the project specific risks begins with the experience that our team can offer. Long delivery times, schedule constraints, access concerns, logistical coordination, and budget shortfalls are part of the risks that are identified during the pricing stage of a project and highlighted during contract award. When something doesn’t go as planned, our team finds solutions to bring things back on track.

Time and time again, we deliver the most complex buildings to exceed expectations.
